# How to Plan for Electronic Component Supply Chain Disruptions

When manufacturer lead times change or a critical component becomes difficult to source, purchasing teams have to make decisions that can affect production schedules, inventory costs, and customer commitments.

You can't eliminate every supply chain disruption, but you can plan component purchases around your actual demand rather than waiting until inventory runs low.

For OEMs and contract manufacturers, that starts with understanding component usage, communicating production requirements, and determining which purchasing arrangements make sense for the parts you use regularly.

## 1. Start with Your Estimated Annual Usage

Before deciding how much inventory to purchase or hold, establish how many components your operation is likely to need.

Your **estimated annual usage (EAU)** provides a starting point for purchasing decisions, especially for components used across ongoing production runs.

For each critical component, consider:

- How many units you expect to use annually
- How frequently you'll need deliveries
- Typical quantities required per delivery
- When your next production run requires parts
- Whether your demand is consistent or varies throughout the year

You don't need a perfect forecast to begin the conversation. However, the more accurately you can estimate usage and delivery requirements, the easier it is to develop a purchasing plan that matches your production needs.

## 2. Identify Components That Need Additional Planning

Not every electronic component requires a formal stocking arrangement.

Focus first on parts where availability or delivery delays could have a significant impact on production.

These may include:

- Connectors or other components with long manufacturer lead times
- Parts purchased repeatedly for established production lines
- Components with customer-specific finishes or configurations
- Parts used in assemblies that require components from multiple manufacturers
- Components needed during a transition to a new manufacturer

Reviewing these parts with your distributor can help identify where advance purchasing or a stocking program would be appropriate.

## 3. Consider a Stocking Program for Recurring Demand

If you're purchasing the same components regularly, a stocking program can help align purchasing with your production schedule.

ElectroShield offers two arrangements depending on your inventory requirements and how you prefer to receive components.

### Bonded Inventory Agreements

With bonded inventory, ElectroShield purchases and holds an agreed quantity of components on our shelves for the term of the agreement.

The price is locked in when the agreement is signed, and you can request releases as needed or arrange a delivery schedule in advance.

You commit to taking the full agreed quantity by the end of the agreement term.

This arrangement can be useful when you have repeat component demand but need flexibility in the timing of individual releases.

### Blanket Purchase Orders with Scheduled Releases

A blanket purchase order establishes a planned purchasing quantity under one PO, typically covering six to nine months.

Release quantities and dates are agreed up front. ElectroShield places manufacturer orders ahead of those dates, building in a buffer to account for supplier lead times.

This approach can work well when your production schedule is relatively predictable and you know when components will be required.

Both arrangements help coordinate purchasing with forecasted demand, but they serve different needs. Neither eliminates all supply-chain risk.

## 4. Coordinate Delivery Schedules and Review Usage

Purchasing components in advance is only part of the process. Inventory also needs to align with when production actually requires those parts.

Work with your distributor to communicate expected delivery quantities, release dates, and upcoming changes in demand.

Once an ElectroShield stocking program is established, your sales representative and our supply chain team regularly review usage with you to help keep inventory levels aligned with your needs.

If your production requirements change, contact your representative as early as possible.

With bonded inventory, parts already held on our shelves can be released against the agreement. With blanket POs, moving a release earlier depends on whether the components have arrived from the manufacturer.

Advance notice gives the team more opportunity to evaluate available options.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can a stocking program prevent electronic component shortages?

A stocking program can help you plan for recurring demand and reduce the need to source the same components with every order. However, it cannot eliminate every supply-chain disruption. The protection it provides depends on the inventory arrangement, manufacturer availability, and agreed purchasing terms.

### What information should I provide when planning component inventory?

Start with your part numbers or application requirements, estimated annual usage, expected delivery quantities and frequency, and the date you need your first shipment. ElectroShield uses that information to help develop a purchasing arrangement around your requirements.

### Are stocking programs only available for circular connectors?

No. ElectroShield can develop stocking programs for components across its product lines, including customer-specific configurations and assemblies combining parts from different manufacturers.

## Plan Your Component Purchases with ElectroShield

If you're managing recurring electronic component purchases, it may be worth reviewing your demand and delivery requirements before your next production run.

ElectroShield works with OEMs and contract manufacturers to develop stocking programs based on their parts, usage forecasts, and delivery schedules.
