How to select the correct waterproof electrical connector

Many electrical connectors are designed to resist water ingress from rain, spray and humidity. But there are underwater applications that require waterproof electrical connectors  or watertight electrical connectors. There is a distinct difference between being waterproof and water-resistant. Waterproof means the connector component is impervious to water regardless of how long it is submerged. Underwater ratings guide design engineers and purchasing agents to the appropriate connectors.

Connector waterproof ratings are typically defined using the Ingress Protection (IP) code system. This system rates how well a connector can withstand dust and water ingress. Typical ratings for immersible electrical components range from IP65 to IP69K. A complimentary NEMA rating, such as NEMA 250 (6P), which also defines ingress protection from solids and liquids, may also be noted in the connector specs.

Connector Impact:

Electrical connectors are exposed to any number of harsh environmental and operational stresses where watertight connections are a requirement. Applications include underwater lighting systems, fluid pumps, extravagant fountain shows, weather monitoring field stations, robotics, subsea oil and gas operations, marine research, renewable energy systems, and more. Saltwater, temperature, sun exposure, vibration and pressure can impact connectors’ ability to remain waterproof and provide reliable, uninterrupted performance.

Underwater Electrical Connector Solution:

ElectroShield works with a number of customers who require durable and reliable waterproof connectors for their unique and demanding applications. They have found great success with the following ElectroShield distributed products:

Conxall:

Micro-Con-X - Utilizing a separate O-Ring, Micro-Con-X connectors are available up to 3-#20 pins/sockets, 4-#22 pins/sockets, and 7-#26 pins/sockets. Meets IP67, IP69K, and NEMA 6P when mated.

Switchcraft:

EP7 – These newly introduced 30 Amp connectors are field installable waterproof circular sealed connectors with an IP68/IP69K rating.

Sealcon:

Strain Relief  - Available features including 1) Submersible – Up to 300 feet, the patented recess and high-performance form seal (grommet) guarantees Type NEMA 4X & 6 (IP68/IP69K) at 150 PSIG (10bar). 2) Liquid tight molded O-Ring with O-Ring results in a liquid tight seal between fitting and installation.

M12 Power - The M12 Power connector is a major milestone in an age of miniaturization.

Power transmission to 16 A and 630 V. IP67/IP69K (EN 60529)/NEMA 4X ratings

M16 Signal* - 35% smaller than M23 connectors. Spring loaded sockets for vibrating environments. Fewer parts make assembly easier and simpler.

M16 TWINTUS* – 3 Different Materials. 2 Different Mount Footprints. 2 Different Connector Configurations.

*Both M16 connectors are IP67/IP69K (EN 60529)/NEMA 4X rated.
